Tigress CanJam March: Exploring alliums this month

Feb 27th, 2010 Posted in Competitions | no comment »
33 Heads of Garlic

The March CanJam secret ingredient was just announced by Ashley over at Small Measure. This month, we’ll be jammin’ and pickling with alliums – onions, garlic, leeks, ramps. These are things which are actually available right now.

So many choices. Red Onion Marmalade with Wine. Hot (and Sweet) Garlic Jam. Pickled Baby Onions.

I’ve got some research to do – stay tuned! My recipe will need to be up before March 19 .. A bit earlier this month, but that works out for me – I’ll be in D.C. for C3 Call On Congress later in the month.

Yesterday I went to the Regional Market, Syracuse’s year-round farmer’s market. Kale, cabbages, nuts, some apples and pears, hard-shelled winter squashes, potatoes, yams, honey, eggs, cheese, pork, coffee, spices, crafts – these are the things that make up a January farmer’s market in central New York. The North Carolina State Fair finishes its October 15-25 2009 run in Raleigh, North Carolina with the following jam-making and preserving results from the official state fair website.

The fair features over 200 jam, preserves, marmalade, canning and junior competitor canning and preserving categories.

http://www.ncstatefair.org/2009/General/index.htm

Results appear here. I would love to include them all for a shout-out, but there are forty-four PAGES of results in mroe categories than I can count. To see the results in a spreadsheet, which is somewhat easier to download, download the results from the website.

Congratulations to all who entered, and to those who came home with a placement or category winning ribbon.

The 2010 North Carolina State Fair will be held in Raleigh form October 14 – 24, 2010.

NY State Fair Jam, part 4: Official results (finally!)

Oct 8th, 2009 Posted in Competitions | no comment »
The New York state seal.
Image via Wikipedia

The NY State Fair website was down for the count for several weeks after the fair ended on September 7, 2009. This delayed posting of the official results. Then I went camping for six days. So my apologies to all that it’s taken me awhile to get the official canning, preserving and jam competition results from my own New York State Fair.

The canning and preserving competition at the NY State Fair is held in two separate divisions: Culinary, hosted at the Art & Home Center, features tasted competions in canning, pickling, relishes and jams. The Flower division, hosted at the Horticulture Building, features pickling and canning competitions for items which are judged on appearance but not tasted.

The mother-daughter team of Janet Bender and Elizabeth Shepard tag-teamed their way through the Flowers canning division, earning three 1st, four 2nd and one 3rd place in the five classes in that division. Janet also earned a 1st in the Culinary division with her canned fruit. Be sure to check my blog for Kathy Wood’s Grand Prize winning Red Pepper Relish. Now, without further ado, here are the rest of the official results:
